SCOREKEEPING RESPONSIBILITIES AND INFORMATION
During the season, you may be asked by your team to keep score for a game. This may include keeping your team’s scorebook or serving as the Official Scorekeeper for the game.
At William S. Hart Pony Baseball & Softball, we want to make the scorekeeping process as simple and enjoyable as possible. Teams have the option of providing a qualified volunteer to keep the Official Scorebook or hiring an Official Scorekeeper through the league.
Hiring a League Scorekeeper
Teams that prefer to use a league-provided scorekeeper should be aware of the following:
- The home team is responsible for securing an Official Scorekeeper for each home game.
- The cost of a league-provided scorekeeper is $40 per game for both baseball and softball.
- Requests must be made at least 72 hours in advance to guarantee availability.
- To request a scorekeeper, contact Gaelynne Gregg at gaelynne55@yahoo.com.
-
Keeping the Official Scorebook Yourself
Anyone serving as the Official Scorekeeper must be able to accurately and completely maintain the Official Scorebook.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Tracking balls, strikes, fouls, outs, and defensive changes.
- Maintaining pitch counts in leagues and divisions where applicable.
- Recording player positions and all defensive changes for every inning.
- Recording all pitching changes.
- Tracking the movement and advancement of base runners.
- Recording the result of each batter’s plate appearance.
- Notifying the umpire when a pitcher reaches an applicable pitch-count limit.
- Completing all required pitching statistics.
- Monitoring minimum-play requirements and notifying the umpire if minimum play has not been met in leagues or divisions where applicable.
The Official Scorebook is an important part of the game record and must be maintained accurately and completely. Failure to properly maintain the Official Scorebook may result in a game being subject to forfeiture under applicable league rules.
